Why is My Personal Style Changing?

My persoanl style is changing! Fake Fabulous

I've been suffering from a mental blogging block recently.
Not because I don't have anything to talk about (far from it) BUT because I'm not sure if you want to hear it!

The main reason for my blog-drought is that I've noticed my style is changing, quite significantly, and I'm not sure if it's blog worthy anymore.

Let me try and explain myself...
Back in the beginning of my blog I was all about the colour.

The BOLDER the better.
Bright bright BRIGHT!!.
Clashing patterns and creating colour-havoc!

I loved wearing colour.
Colours also photograph beautifully (much easier than black and white) and are bold and vibrant on the pages of a blog.
PLUS, they're also wonderful for brightening up your real every day life too!

Colour packs a delightful punch.

A typically "me" look...

You can check out some of my most colourful looks from the archives and get a laugh.

{On the right hand side when you use a desktop or laptop}

Some outfits include questionable combinations, it's true, but I still stand by them!
Even my hair was bolder and brighter.

Style is constantly evolving and as we grow so does our taste in fashion.

As I move further into my 40s... and towards my 50s... I'm finding that I'm drawn to a completely different style aesthetic.

I've gone from this....

To aspiring to look like this....

My persoanl style is changing! Fake Fabulous

I want that effortless, almost masculine look.
I want to be elegant and edgy.
I yearn for simplicity.

I am being drawn to neutral tones (horror!) AND even a minimal look.

{I know....Im more shocked than anyone!}

I'm not sure what's happening to me but I'm powerless to fight it.

So, from now on my looks might only involve ONE bold piece, ONE bright and bold colour... or even show options for wearing... Wait for it....

BASICS!?

{I can hardly believe my fingers typed that last word.}

I've been selling some of my bolder pieces.
I've been searching for some "Good quality classics"... blimey, who's have thought it?!

Maybe it's my age?
Maybe the time we live in?
Maybe lockdown?

Who knows the reason.
All I know is that I'm changing and there is no point in arguing... I'm always right after all (ask my husband 😝)

Let me know your thoughts.
Are you interested in a more "wearable" style of blog post?
Or do you crave the colour clashes?
Type BASICS or COLOURS in the comments.
(Or drop me an email samantha44blair.com(at)gmail.com)
I'd love to hear your opinion!

  1. Samantha don't worry what we think ,you do whatever is right for you in the here and now. We are all evolving as we get a bit older and change can be good at times. I think if you put a refuse sack over you &added some of your fab accessories you would still look gorgeous. It's you that makes the outfits "pop" not just the colour. Enjoy your new adventure in style. . from an equally pale Irish gal xx

  2. Hi Samantha, I'm feeling this, too. Perhaps because staying home has made me realize how extraneous some of my clothing and accessories feel now? But I would LOVE to see how you style this next phase of your life. It's sure to be distinctive and gorgeous! Thank you for continuing to write.

  3. i completely understand this! some things i feel like are too young for me these days...but i've been told to throw out those notions of dressing out of my age---but i think it's a natural progression that happens that i feel more connected to more refined clothing....

    1. I agree Eva! I don't think of things as too young but maybe we're growing away from ironic or cutsie outfits? Refined is such a perfect word to choose! I want to look cool and refined... I'm not sure I'll get there but I'm going to give it a try. Thank you for your support. Xxx

  4. I'm evolving into my hair color bley (blonde-grey=my word).....so I'm going for more grey, blues, white (horror) and loving it. Do you, what ever that may be...turn into....feel like. Day to day it can all change, who cares we have lived long enough to have that option.

    1. Bley!!! I love it!
It sounds like it should be a thing. Like Ombre.
Brilliant. I completely agree about being happy to have lived long enough to have options.... Not to mention being privileged enough to be able to express ourselves. Thank you so much for your comment and support. Xxx

    (I do, anyway!)
Not just because, even as your style evolves, I know that you still have a really interesting eye but more importantly because:
I have learned from, been encouraged by, and deeply appreciated your strong voice. Your articulated backbone strengthens our collective spine.

  6. I love colours but not necessarily colour clashes. I usually wear a bright colour with a neutral but I very rarely do an all neutral outfit. It will be interesting bro see your new take on things.

    1. I agree Loree.... And I'm nervous about being drawn to all neutrals. I'll be interested to see if I can pull it off.... Or end up like a sack of spuds. 🤣

  8. Watching our favourite bloggers' styles evolve is part of this whole journey, Samantha! We don't come here for bright colours, we come here for YOU. Whatever you're wearing. I have also found myself drawn to funky, edgy looks, with more neutrals, but that doesn't stop me from diving right back into colour when the mood strikes me.

Please, play with your style, explore your newer inclinations...and share it with us!

  12. I am always interested in your outfits whatever the colour (or not). Interestingly this also happened to me a couple of years ago, as one who always loved edgy, rock chic type outfits I was suddenly drawn to more classic clothes. I am finding a nice balance between the two now - more like Classic with a bit of Edge. I realised that Dressing Evolution is a natural progression and keeps our style and look fresh. Go for it! 13. I think it's an evolution that has come about partly of the strange times we're in and also of the start of another chapter in your book of life. Everyone has reassessed their lives to some degree recently and ot was always going to be that your personal style evolved...even the Queen has changed her style slightly over the years (and I bet she's glad she hasn't had to wear hats for a while!).
I would love to see the shift in style, it's something I'm going through too.

  14. I follow your blog for many different reasons. Actually, your blog is the only fashion blog that I have consistently followed. I love that you "shop" from your closet, buy charity shopped clothes, take looks and recreate them with adjustments to fit your body shape and your personal preferences while teaching us how to do the same, that you occasionally throw in posts about other things like fitness, makeup, crocheted creations, clothes that help with hot flashes, etc. I will continue to read your blog either way.

  15. I'd LOVE to join you in your next chapter. We evolve - I've gone from a 'vibrant autumn' to a softer palette of cool and warm middle tones which feel right for me now. I stopped dying my hair auburn to find it's now a warm silver, which I absolutely love. Rising Not Fading is my motto. Please keep going!

  16. I’m sure I will always enjoy your blog. And you get to do what you want with your blog. But I can’t help but think of how very young you are. I’m 20ish years older than you and still love everything about fashion and style. Color, pattern, texture, shine! - like the WNTW duo would say. I know you’ll look beautiful in whatever you choose to wear, but please don’t rule anything out. You’re so young and lovely.

    1. I won't give up my colours all together Kathleen! They're part of my wardrobe and I won't be ditching any pieces or buying a whole load of new bits and bobs. A more minimal feel will come from what I already own.
You're very generous with your kind words and I aprreciate them greatly! 🥰

  18. I think that style is always evolving and it's part of its essence to change as we change. Even if I love a colorful outfit and all the brightness and Clash of patterns, I also enjoy how you style basics. Actually, I love this structured, masculine, cool style (wow, those jackets and coats are Amazing!) and I think that you sport it brilliantly.
I'd like to see you enjoying your outfits and sharing your style evolution with us, it's such an interesting idea!

  19. I suspect that many of your readers have changed their style aesthetic as well over the years. Maybe because of age, maybe because of the times we live in. Either way, most of your readers have probably evolved in some ways too. I know I have changed considerably from the person I was years ago when I started reading your blog!

MWAHAHA! Come to the Dark Side, Samantha...THE DARKKKKK SIDDDDDE

    :-)

It's normal to change and your style to evolve. If not, you end up on some daytime TV show being tricked into an on-live-tv makeover!

I'm excited to see your progression, Samantha! You do you...and we'll follow! Maybe you'll inspire a whole new generation of followers!
