The imagery was beautiful but the outfits were eye-wateringly expensive and sometimes simply UGLY (and not in a good way).
Then I turned the page...
Suddenly I felt a warm and fuzzy fashion-loving feeling.
A trend I could embrace wholeheartedly.
The SUPER cardigan.
Of course, my love of a chunky cardigan goes back, well.... for 40 years at least!
BUT these super cardigans are not just chunky they're bright, bold and (best of all) edgy and trendy.
Hahahahaha.
An 'edgy' cardigan?
Who'd have thought it was possible?!
The cardigans featured in the magazine were from the likes of...
- Hayley Menzies
- Pinko
- Essential Antwerp
- Ganni
- Kitri
- Rouje
BUT...
And it's a big but.
Most of them looked like pieces you could find in a charity shop, or at the back of your grandma/grandpa's wardrobes.
If you love the look and want to give it a go, save your pennies and scour the secondhand shops instead of splashing the cash.
Size up a couple of sizes and you've nailed it!
For me, the most important thing that makes a trendy cardigan look 'trendy' (as opposed to frumpy) is to keep the rest of your look cool and casual.
Thrown-on and effortless.
If you're happy to mix prints and colours then all the better!
I love the outfit I'm wearing today.
All my favourite elements in one comfortable look.
This Super Cardigan trend is one I'm happy to jump on board with and I'm going to have fun experimenting.
Cardigans as jackets.
Perfect for a summer Scotland!
I've worn chunky cardigans A LOT here at fake fabulous.
Here are a few outfit ideas you might enjoy:
- How to wear ugly clothes.... featuring this cardigan!
- Geeky Cardigan and yellow trousers.
- A big hairy monster of a cardigan....with oodles of layers.
- Statement knits... with THIS cardigan again... it's a well-loved piece.
- More cardigan outfits can be found HERE.
What do YOU think of this trend?
Are you keen to jump on board, like me?
Or do you think cardigans are frumpy?
I'd love to know your thoughts.
LEATHER SHOES: Puma

I'm wearing cardigans all the time! I think they look good on any outfit and are not frumpy at all, non!
ReplyDeleteMe too Nancy!
DeleteThese big "ugly' versions are even better!!

Always liked cardigans, but especially now when 'personal weather' requires quick removal, so jumpers are out. Maybe that's why they are seen as frumpy? Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteAccording to a recent American blog (and all the comments on it) frumpy has a completely different meaning in the US - sort of slobby! Su
Really Su?!
DeleteThat's interesting so "frumpy" is slobby in the US and old-ladyish here.
That is interesting.
Maybe "mumsy' is a better term? Or dowdy?
I don't know!
Anyway, whatever the word, we don't want to look it or feel it do we? Hahahahaaha.
I hadn't considered the "personal weather" cardigan association before so thank you for that seed of thought.
Maybe that's the reason they've been historically frumpy?
I feel the tide is turning though!!

Love how you play with color and patterns! Starting to try new combinations myself: orange with an olive skirt this week - very much out of my black/blue/purple rut. Got two new cardigans for spring in coral and blush, but I'm afraid I've already missed cardi season here in Israel... :( So will only use them on my (quite a few) upcoming trips.
ReplyDeleteOrange and olive... lovely combination!
DeleteI'm sure you'll get plenty of wear from your new cardigans on your travels.
If you ever come to Scotland make sure you pack them!! :oP

Wait ONE pound? Best bargain EVER or what? I love, LOVE chunky oversized cardigans like this one, especially when it comes in a bold colour - this mustard hue is so pretty! Unfortunately chunky thick cardis are not very appropriate in our local weather here, but I do own a couple that I use when I travel somewhere colder. Really hope to be using them again soon!

You'd be sweltering in this one Liyana.. that's for sure!
DeleteIt's dense wool and roasty-toasty.
Perfect for Scotland.
I love your new blog name BTW!!

Love this outfit, and that cardigan in particular. I adore cardigans of all styles and weights. Akways have - always will. Have dozens and dozens. Wear them year round. Don’t think cardigans are inherently frumpy (dowdy)! It’s all in how they are styled!
ReplyDeleteI agree Kathleen!
DeleteIn fact I think ANYTHING can look dowdy/frumpy/mumsy/boring.
As you rightly say, it's all in how it's worn.
I couldn't live without my cardigans... it's far too cold :oP

I've loved a chunky cardigan for even longer than you Sam! However, I'm quite distracted by the pattern of your very cute culottes (?) It looks like little robotic fish! :-) I also love the Tatty Devine necklace. I haven't seen you wear the black fish necklace for awhile. That would be a fun compliment to the culottes.
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha.. Robot fish!
DeleteI like that.
(although they're eyes)
I'll be sure to wear them with my fish skeleton soon :oP
I love the fact you've been loving cardigans for a good long stretch too Jude!!
You can't beat that cosy hug!

I love a good chunky cardigan but still haven't got any lol. Perhaps I ought to go and have a look at the charity shops. Sadly they're not very good over here in Portugal. I'll have to do it next time I'm in the UK.
ReplyDeleteI love your outfits. Those culottes are brilliant!!
Suzy xxx
Awww Suzy.
DeleteI know you'd look fab in a chunky cardigan... bright and bold, probably with ribbing or sleeve details.
Something BIG.
Maybe you'll find one when you head back to the UK?
Or on ebay??

I do love this cardigan and never thought it was ugly! that mustard color rocks!
ReplyDeleteI think you created a trendy-cool look, and love the pink and mustard working together with the cute necklace!. You totally rock!
Totally agree that 'second hand first' is the wisest option when embracing a new trend, as most of them were trendy previously, there are such few things really New!.
I also love a chunky cardigan, so I'm happy with this trend!
