Is orange the WORST colour to wear for an interview?
Apparently so!
I was reading an article recently listing the top colours to wear to an interview, and orange was mentioned as the worst.
A really big no-no if you want that job.
(Have a look online, there are a few articles on this subject.)
A subtle blue is supposed to be the best for both men and women.
{Maybe not this cobalt though!}
Orange is very unprofessional.
Orange sends a message of too much creativity (??).
Wearing orange means you probably have a fun personality.
Terrible right?
Hmmm....
Luckily, I am not going for an interview.
{Thank goodness because this outfit would definitely NOT land me the job!}
BUT...
If I was interviewing someone to come and work with me (at Fake Fabulous) orange would definitely help them get the job!
Fun Personality and too much creativity?
Yes please!
I really do LOVE a splash of orange.
All joking aside, never underestimate the importance of making the right 'first impression' at an interview.
Those initial few seconds really do count.
I would never recommend adding lots of colour (and too much personality) to your formal interview attire....You can do that once you have landed the job 😝!
{Save your new orange trousers for the second day.}
What you can say about yourself using colour...
- BLACK - I am Powerful, Disciplined and Strong. Perfect for that management position!
- WHITE - I am immaculate with great attention to detail. I am strong and organised.
- GREY - I am Practical, Cautious and Self-Sufficient.
- RED - I am Powerful, Energetic, Passionate and Confident.
- ORANGE - I am very Creative, Confident and Vibrant.
- YELLOW - I believe in Freedom and Fairness. I am Optimistic and Joyous.
- GREEN - I am Well-Balanced and Secure.
- BLUE - I am a great Communicator. I am Loyal and can be Trusted.
- BROWN - I am Stable, Honest and Practical.
- PURPLE - I am Sophisticated, Creative, Wise and Spiritual.
- PINK - I am Affectionate and Serene.
This outfit is certainly not professional, but it is perfect for adding a pop of colour to a dull day.
Perfect for boosting my mood and making me smile.
And, perfect for hiding a multitude of secret layers!
These over-the-knee boots are warm enough on their own but become super-cosy with the addition of thick socks and woollen tights.
Adding two thermal layers (one of which is hidden) under a sheer camisole top makes my outfit seem lighter, brighter and less "Wintery".
A bold necklace (and neutral bag) finished things off nicely.
What would you wear if you had an interview tomorrow?
My last one was twenty years ago (for a Scientific post) and it was VERY boring... grey suit and a cream shirt....ZZZzzzzzz.
COAT: Hearts and Hands @ Urban Outfitters (old)
HAT: M&S gents
THERMAL: Uniqlo
GLOVES: Dents
NECKLACE: Oliver Bonas
BAG: c/o Bonmarché
SKIRT: c/o Bonmarché
BOOTS: Duo

Well...that's such an interesting concept, Samantha!! Why would it be bad to be creative? Even for those "boring" jobs, there needs to be some creativity involved, right?
ReplyDeleteSo wear the orange (although, I guess it's important to get the job first) but maybe instead of changing what we are wearing----we need to change the people running the interviews?
You look marvelous in this color!!

I suppose it depends on the interviewers.
DeleteMy last interview panel consisted of 2 boring (and, as it turned out utterly miserable) "old' men and an equally dull and depressed woman!
An orange blouse with aubergine trousers might have pushed them over the edge :oP
My 'cream' blouse was too radical as it was! hahahaha.
Thank goodness I don't have to go through that again.

This makes me happy because probably 50% of my wardrobe has orange in it and I wear it all the time.
ReplyDeleteI think orange suits you. It's sassy! ; P
bisous
Suzanne
Orange IS sassy Suzanne! Maybe that is why I love it too :o) XXX
DeleteIt depends on the sector, I think orange would be fine if you were interviewing for the marketing/advertising sector. Orange really suits you.

Thank you Gail. It certainly does depend on the sector.... I instinctively knew to dull down my look, even all of those years ago.
DeleteHopefully the more artistic and creative sectors have more of an open mind.

ReplyDeleteWell, like you, I'd be far more likely to give someone a job if they turned up for an interview in orange, or another bright colour, rather than a traditional grey suit, but then I am known for my love of colour! I never wear white or grey, and rarely wear black (they just don't suit me); most of my wardrobe is blue, green, orange, purple, red and yellow, with some brown thrown in as a neutral, so clearly I'm a loyal, stable and well-balanced combination of fun, creativity, energy, passion, confidence, wisdom and optimism! I did get called a banana when I was wearing my yellow dress yesterday though...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I particularly like bright colours paired with navy, and you've worn that combination to great effect here. And I love the cute hat!
Yay to all of those attributes Fran!
DeleteAs for being a banana.... I would much rather get that comment than to blend into the background and be forgettable.
Your yellow dress sounds like a breath of fresh air!

You brighten my day in this look Samantha.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about the rainbow of color I realize that there are few I don't like. They do certainly evoke emotional reactions and I guess there will naturally be the Ying and Yang of responses. I think that's what makes them wonderful.
Your look makes me smile and that hat makes you seem fun and approachable. Apparently one must hide those attributes until well established in certain professions.
Our prejudices can be very confounding.
Indeed Judy!
DeleteWell put.
Thankfully I am at a stage in my life where I can wear what I want, when I want.
I work in a lab and cover-up with a Howie Coat. No one cares what I wear under it and I can remove it at breaktimes to express my true self.
The rest of the time I am lucky to be able to wear whatever I like and then talk about it here!
I am very grateful for that.
I guess you are in a similar position? No real constraints.

Oh Sam, if you turned up for an interview at my gallery I'd be delighted to see this splash of orange. In the art world creativity and bold colours are to be embraced, but I suppose if you want to work in some terrible office job then maybe your advice for something more sober is good.
ReplyDeleteI love everything in this ensemble today, especially the coat and boots combo. The navy hat is a cute extra and is perfect for your face shape - you're so lucky to have a "hat face".
I'm touting some orange on my blog today too. Must be our need to brighten up a winter's day!
Have a fab weekend x

Thank you Anna.... I would love to work in an art Gallery. In fact my daughter was moaning when she was given the top of the pictures dusting job. We have 32 paintings/pictures/artworks! Hahahaha...a mini gallery! I LOVE original art and it gives me so much joy. XXX
DeleteI've never heard that orange color looks unprofessional!, shocking news for me!. I really love orange, and really love your outfit, particularly your orange coat which is a like a shot of vitaminic sunshine!. And you look so lovely wearing it!, lovely color combo, lovely boots and accessories! Gorgeous!
ReplyDelete(My last interview was also twenty years ago, I was all dressed in black and didn't get the job!)
besos
Hahahaha....sorry to laugh Monica but I can hardly imagine you all in black! Maybe orange would have bagged you the job? :o) XXX
DeleteI love clothes which reflect personality and I don't think anything vibrant should be regarded as unprofessional x
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. This outfit is so you! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of orange for myself but I love a big pop of color if it suits the persons coloring! #brillblogposts
