Pink, floral and feminine...
Not necessarily three words you would associate with Fake Fabulous? To be honest, I really don't know how to describe my personal style.
But, I do know that 'delicate and feminine' are not words I would choose to describe my style.
The feminine look is something I admire on others, but hardly ever tap into myself.
There is no denying that some 40+ women have a gift for the feminine look, and the super-girly clothes can look fun, playful, ironic and effortless on the under 30's.
BUT...
There is something slightly odd about a 40+ women dressing like a little girl.
Anything too 'pink and frilly' can make the over 40 woman look either:
- Old
- Desperate
- Pathetic
- Slightly unhinged
I read somewhere that once you are heading towards your 40's (or beyond) "pretty" clothes should be avoided.
Hmmmm...
As you know, I don't care much for fashion rules and (despite not being a very delicate and feminine type of person) I seem to have rolled a few of these forbidden items into one look...
Oops, silly me!
This A-line, linen, floral skirt is an oldie... and a firm favourite of mine.
Unfortunately, it very rarely sees the light of day as it is hardly ever warm enough to wear it here.
So, as soon as the sun was shining (and the wind was not splitting me in two) my flowery skirt came out to play.
{We need all the vitamin D we can get, here, in Scotland!}
I would normally reach for gutties (or sandals) with this skirt, but today I found myself reaching for these pink, patent ballerinas.
{Oh dear, more pink!}
A-line skirts and ballet flats can look really frumpy, but I think the fact the skirt is slightly above my knee meant I got away with it... just!
What do you think?
Would you wear a heel with this skirt?
This open-backed top was yet another delicate, and feminine, addition to this look.
Sheer fabric and lace shoulders, so pretty.
{I did need a camisole underneath, for decency and extra warmth}
I piled on yet more pink (I am bad), in the form of a plaited suede belt, leather satchel and a delicate watch.
My silver cuff, and heart earrings finished this 'girly' look off perfectly.
GET THE LOOK

I think that wearing things I wouldn't "normally wear" is the absolute best thing about getting older and blogging (I can't decide which was more influential)
ReplyDeleteAs for your outfit---you've kinda done a monochromatic look with a couple splashes of color!! Love that.
Would I wear heels? I'm not sure...I really think you could do either with this skirt and look great. You call it an a-line, but to me, it doesn't look as big on the bottom hem as usual! It almost looks like a pencil, so maybe that's why these flats work so well (and can I tell you how much I love those flats---bright pink---ahhhh)
You certainly do look feminine---but hey, you are a girl!

I think it is a combination of both Jodie. Getting older makes us bolder and blogging keeps us curious and evolving. It is the perfect combination! XXX
DeleteI grapple with these questions a lot. Recently there have been a multitude of clothing items embellished with lace. I am a complete sucker for a little lace.
ReplyDeleteI especially like the "bits" that added to the unexpected fabrics like denim or plaid. I feel like this is a way to be feminine without going completely over the top. Also I like to pair one feminine piece with an otherwise edgy look. They tame each other ...?
At a full 20 years your senior Samantha I continue to enjoy a pretty, feminine look every now and then. Like you I also enjoy breaking a fashion rule.
You look so pretty in your pinks, florals and eyelet blouse. An irresistible look for a warm spring day!
Thank you Judy...I am glad you are with me in the rule breaking! Yay!!! XXX

ReplyDeleteI always think redheads look great in pink, and you are no exception! :-) I don't do well with full-on girly, though I do like something sheer and floaty as a top layer occasionally.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan! XXX
DeleteDid you notice that you are floating in the 3rd photo? Impressive stuff!!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...yes...I jumped! XXX

DeleteHello Samantha, I love the new aspect of your blog, and how gorgeous you look.
ReplyDeleteTo say the truth I never take into consideration what people might think about the way I dress. If I did I would end up looking like my mother in law, and that is bad, hahhahahhahaha.
have a fantastic Friday
Hahaha...yes, indeed Sacramento! That would be bad!! :oD XXX
DeleteYou look marvelous!! Ironically, I am learning about many of the things I apparently wasn't supposed to be wearing anymore from you, right as I am learning how I actually can wear them! Ha! Thanks for all of your inspirations! -Patti
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Patti! What a lovely comment, it really means a lot to me. XXX
DeleteI don't think this is overly girly at all Samantha. The pastel is understated, and you've not gone over the top with frills and flounces (not like some of us here). And those pretty pink pumps are very simple too. All in all, it's certainly only a nod to girly, which is totally fine no matter what age. And I have to ask, are you growing your hair? It looks much longer than usual and it suits you.

Ahhh...you are eagle eyed Anna!
DeleteI am at that maybe/maybe not stage. :oP
I am still getting it cut every 6 weeks but asked my hairdresser to leave some length on top in case I went with the maybe option. I never commit to anything really and just chop as the mood takes me.
Thank you so much for noticing! XXX
I must say I'm damn impressed with your levitating abilities! Who cares about pink when you can fly around without your feet touching the ground? LOL
ReplyDeleteI think you look great in this. I'm a fan of girly and will continue wearing it into my 50's...which as it happens is next week : )
bisous
Suzanne
Hahaha...yes!
DeleteMy magic pink slippers.
Happy Birthday Suzanne.

Normally, I'm not a fan of girly either, but that pink skirt looks great. And I really like it with the flats. I'm wearing some of my more feminine skirts with my Stan Smith Adidas these days. Didn't think I could bring myself after a lifetime of "ladylike" pumps... but turning sixty (the other day) made me realize if I'm going to get adventuresome, I'd better get at it!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to wear some white trainers too Susan...but I have yet to buy any (I'd better hurry up before I miss the boat). Although I did have other colours available and didn't bother...maybe I needed a pink pair for this look?
DeleteYou are right about getting "at it"...better to have fun while we can! XXX
Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style
ReplyDeleteA pleasure. XXX
DeleteSamantha, I ADORE this look. It looks feminine but I think there's just something about you that kind of adds an edge to anything you wear. I think pairing the skirt with flats was the perfect decision; adding a pair of heels would have just made it all look too feminine - but not that there's anything wrong with being feminine, of course, but we always like that extra edge, don't we? You know I love my sneakers but I actually believe not many sneakers could have amped up the look as well as your ballet flats did. You look beautiful here, I don't want to change anything! The bag, all the pinks and accessories, just perfection. I've always wanted a Cambridge Satchel Company bag, and yours is the cutest I've ever seeeennn *swoons*

Oh, thank you Liyana!
DeleteYou should get yourself one of these bags (this one was a gift from my hubby..clever man) they are such lovely stiff leather and will last forever. I am sure this bag will still be going strong when I am no longer! :oP
