Are Skinny Jeans really Over?

Fake Fabulous | Are Skinny Jeans over?

Skinny jeans.

My beloved Skinny Jean is falling out of favour with the fashion police.

Many "experts" would condemn them anyway...
  • They are totally inappropriate for most occasions...too casual, too sexy, too revealing.
  • They can be very unflattering....every lump and bump is on display. Muffin top anyone?
  • They can look a little "sad" and "desperate" on anyone over the age of 20....Ahem? Excuse me?!
AND now, they are officially out of fashion.

Skinny jeans are over!

Should the skinny jean really step aside and let the new denim shapes and styles shine?

While many people will cheer at the demise of the skinny, there are those of us who will be mourning their passing.
Skinnies have had such a long run in the fashion spotlight.
I feel like they have been around forever!

{They have, haven't they??}

Is the skinny jean really dead in the fashion water?
Sigh.
I don't mind telling you that I still love them and I am not ready to give them up.
What should I do?

Luckily, being over 40 has its advantages.
Let me explain...

Nobody expects you to be fashionable.

One of the great things about being older is that nobody expects you to be fashionable.
Yes, of course, you can be bang 'on trend' and sport the latest designer looks, if your budget allows.
If not, you can 'nod' to the trends.
But only if you want to!

{WARNING: Totally ignoring trends is a one way ticket to Frumpsville}

However, whether you want to follow fashion, or not, you are entitled to wear whatever you want!
If you have honed your personal style, and you love a certain look, then it is perfectly acceptable to be completely out of fashion... so to speak.
To make your own rules.
If you love skinny jeans but the fash-pack are telling you not to, you don't have to listen.
You are free to do your own thing.
Age has it's benefits.

{Okay, the list is short...but this is a good one!}

Fake Fabulous | Scuba sweatshirt & Chaps bag.

Doing my own skinny thang!

Today I am wearing my new, saddle brown, super tight, skinnies and I don't care if I am not in fashion.
I am feeling pretty good.
They are a great (snug) fit with a decent rise...my muffin is tucked safely away.
The best part is that they were in the clearance section of the sale.
It turns out nobody else wanted this look in their wardrobe.
Lucky me!

I teamed them with this equally "over" scuba fabric, slightly quilted, sweatshirt and an old (possibly vintage) blouse.
Not in fashion, at all...oops...naughty me!
I had to wear my autumn hero's and these fine wool socks.
The colour combination was hard to resist!

Do you love, or hate, Skinny Jeans?
Are there any styles you wear regularly, regardless of what the fashion police say?

I look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Fun outfit! I love your boots!

Well, I'm definitely not going to put my skinnies away! But I'm over 40 so nobody expects me to be fashionable! :-) It took me quite some time to warm up to skinny jeans when they first appeared on the scene, and now that we are good friends, there is no way I'll stop wearing them!

  3. The skinnies have been such a staple, so it's hard to imagine them really out! Besides, then what will i wear with my peplum tops, and my baggy shirts? I know styles have to change and I laugh at how I'm not always into the new ones at first. But hopefully us "old" women will keep these babies somewhat alive!
You look positively wonderful in your get up Samantha! Those cool ankle boots will make even a non-trendy item look hip!! jodie

    1. I have seen your legs in skinnies, Jodie, and they are a definite keeper.
I think many women, of all ages, feel this way about our skinnies. My eldest daughter grew up with them. My two youngest girls love them too. Real women are not ready to give them up. Not without a fight, anyway!
As for your congratulations....thank you so much! I was gobsmacked, if I am honest.
Your support (and comments) really do mean a lot to me. XXX

  4. I agree with Jodie. I need streamlined jeans when I'm baggy or oversized on the top. Plus, if they fit right I just like them.

I actually often think the fashion police are really just marketing strategists trying to figure out how to get people to spend more money.

I love the warm spice colours here and those boots are killing me.

    bisous

    1. I agree Suzanne! They need us to keep spending so they tell us what to wear. I get bored easily, so changing my wardrobe comes naturally to be. however, I am not too keen on being told what I should and shouldn't be doing! Thank you for this comment and I am glad you like my boots...I love them too!! XXX

  5. I love that you keep me abreast of all of the latest fashion trends, Samantha. One of the pleasures of being an older fashionista is that I do my own thing, but it's still good to know what the marketing gurus are pushing next. I love my skinnies too, so won't be giving up on them any time soon. These new ones of yours are fab and such a delicious colour too. Oh, and how I pine for these boots with renewed envy each time you feature them!

  8. It took me a while to go down the skinny route too, but having only just embraced them, I'm not ready to give up on them yet! I think the reason so many people seem to want to hang onto them (I still see plenty of women wearing them on a daily basis in real life), is that it's not really possible to replace them easily with something else. As another commenter has said, they are ideal for wearing with loose tops, to give a balanced, flattering shape, but flares (or whatever the fashion gurus are trying to push onto us now) just aren't as versatile. Long may skinnies reign!

    1. Yay...another vote to save the skinnies :oD. I am sure consumers will win out over the "gurus". There will always be a place for skinny jeans in my life too. XXX

  9. This is a very good combination. Somehow a shirt underneath a sweater doesn't work for me. Don't know why. And your colour combination is great.
Ready to give up skinnies??? NO NO NO, don't take them away from me. NOOooooh

  12. They're out!?! Gasp!! Says who. You know me--the librarian. I will be off to research this one. In the meantime, I'm wearing mine! Just wore a pair Saturday as a matter of fact. I felt great! Mine too are high rise so I can tuck in my muffin. :D

  13. Whattt I didn't know they were supposed to be out. But like what you've shown in this post: we obviously do not care even if they're out. We're holding on to them.

I'm not sure if I keep up with the "in" trends per say, but I always take inspiration from street style, and I still see so many people looking good in skinny jeans, so I see no reason to throw them out. Plus you look GOOD in skinny jeans, Samantha!

  14. If they're out, then I'm stuffed with my Seasonal Skinny Style Challenge still having half a year to go - ha ha! I know, it's all cropped kick flares and culottes apparently - yeah right, if you have legs like stick insects! I'm sticking to my skinnies - darn it!
Totally lovin' this look on you Samantha.
