Cobalt Dress & Vintage leather Jacket | Bold colour.

Styling a cobalt blue shift dress with black leather.

Coloured tights and a houndstooth clutch.

Someone once told me I was an 'Autumn', and I should stick to Autumn colours in order to look anything other than;
"Death warmed up".
So, for years I used to think that blue was not 'My Colour'.
Always admiring it from afar, but never really doing anything about it.

Funny, because my Grandpa gave me cobalt blue ribbons (to tie in my hair) when I was a little girl and I always loved them.
Grandpas can't be wrong...can they?

Photographing yourself is a real eye opener when it comes to style (and beauty too, see my missing eyelashes post here).

Aspects of your look that you thought were okay, or nobody would really notice, are glaringly obvious on film!
For example:
  • Not grooming your eyebrows.
  • Chipped nail polish or old fashioned colours.
  • Shiny tights.
  • Bad posture.
  • Ill-fitting underwear.
Also, things about yourself (or your body) that you thought were awful, turn out to be not too bad after all.
For me, those things were:
  • My skinny legs are not as hideous as I had been led to believe.
  • Pale skin is not disgusting.
  • Wearing colours that are not "Muted and Autumnal" is okay!
  • Cropped hair does not make me look like a boy.

I am realising that I CAN wear blue and my Grandpa was right all along (I knew it!)

So, the camera never lies (unless it has been photoshopped, but that is another story).
In my case, the camera is telling me that blue can be "My Colour" and I have subsequently worn lots of it!
(On a Shopping trip and with a Cropped top/skinny jeans combination, for example)

Cobalt blue and Black leather.

Cobalt blue and black leather is a mixture I would have avoided a few years ago.
But, today it makes a smart and simple outfit.
I tried to maintain a pop of colourful personality with the addition of blue tights. Any opportunity to wear bright hosiery, and I am there!
I know I should probably go for a bolder lip colour...orange maybe??....but I am still a lipstick novice (more to come on that subject). I am trying to get better at it!

Here, I am trying to look all moody and sultry (attempting to get into the Bond-girl vibe) but I just end up looking a bit miserable...Fail!
Moody (or pouty) is not a look I pull off very well.

This vintage leather jacket was a charity shop find that I have had for many years.
It is a classic shape that never really dates.
I know there seems to be a cycle of leather-styles, that do the rounds, season after season:

 Bomber - biker - blazer

But, this style always pops up somewhere...It never really goes away.

I decided to layer two dresses together, under the jacket.
Mostly for warmth, but the sleeves of the bodycon dress add some colour and interest and just a little more personality to the blue shift.
Layering is a great way to make items, that are perhaps too thin or too short, a bit more wearable.
See this bodycon dress, on it's own, in this post Very tight and Very short!
And, I have worn this blue shift dress before (see that post here), layered with an orange shirt.

Black knee boots are a classic.
I bought this pair from a shop that makes boots to fit different calf widths, from very narrow to very large.
Having always rattled around inside knee boots, I was so thrilled to zip up a pair and them to touch my leg.
It is a great feeling when something, you never thought would ever fit you, finally does!
I now need to get saving for a second pair, with a punch of colour this time maybe?

I added this little houndstooth clutch for a pop of contrast and pattern.
See how I wore it to a wedding HERE.

Do you avoid certain colours because they are not 'your colour'? Or, just not you?

Can you find knee boots to fit?
Please share your thoughts in the comments....Especially if you know places to get great boots!

  3. Hi Sam! I had people tell me they loved cobalt on me, this summer, yet this was never a color I gravatayed toward as I thought it wouldn't look great with my fair skin etc. As you show, it looks great and vibrant on you! Love the black jacket and the classic boots. I have thin calves, so that is the only issue with boots, as I know what you are talking about. I think sometimes we have to go for it and try things to see for ourselves!
Looking gorgeous my friend! I love your pixie cut.. You totally pull it off!

    1. Thank you so much Jess. I think there are many women who struggle to find boots to fit. We are not alone! I would love to see you in some blue...I am sure you would look great with your red hair. Ice and fire! XXX

  5. The cobalt blue looks great on you! I love the layered dresses, too!

Recently, I'm trying to have an open mind when it comes to color and try things I wouldn't normally try.

  6. I love cobalt color. It is perfect bold color. And I admire how you can find your bargains like this black leather jacket. That is really special talent. Knee boots is quit "painful" story for me. I don´t have thin calf, so you can imagine. I hope to find some nice soon. Your boots look amazing. All your look is very nice and city chic. o)

    1. Thank you Anna. It is really hard to find a pair of boots to fit. I am currently looking for some OTK boots that do not resemble a pair of waders when I put them on! I can imagine that it is the same for you too. XXX

  7. Samantha! This outfit!! I was just on Rachel the Hat's post with a blue beanie and tote explaining to her that I need the blue heart emoticon. I need it here as well! You get five blue hearts! I love it all. AND, as inspired by you and your blue legs, I bought some blue tights just yesterday...

    You're incredible!

    1. S, I have this bad habit of looking at the pictures, commenting, and then going back to read. I know silly. I could/would save myself a lot of trouble by slowing down and not getting so excited.

So, a few more things....For some reason with the blue and black, I would pair this dress with a bright bold fushcia lippy. I do love orange with blue too, but for some reason I just think pink would be better here.

I can't believe you thought you couldn't wear blue? I don't get it. What about your eyes. I kind of don't like those color thingies because you can TOTALLY wear blue!

And, finally (I had to scroll up), thanks for the reminder regarding the eyebrows. I TOTALLY need to groom mine, so....off to go do this I go!

  8. I agree with Ann re the lippy. I think everyone can wear every colour, you just need to find the right shade, that's all. It's like me and yellow - I avoid citrus yellows and mustard but soft pale yellow is fine. And you've totally found the right shade of blue here. Cobalt has enough depth for you, a richness and it look utterly gorgeous on you.
I think I might have worn a different colour in the tights, only because - and I tread carefully, not wanting to offend - it could look slightly like Avatar? A purple/indigo shade to pick out the purple in the other dress you're wearing underneath would look amazing. But what the heck, it's your outfit and you're rocking a blue (my favourite colour)!
I love the idea of wearing two dresses for maximum effect - clever trick - and I want your jacket and boots.

    1. Avatar! Hahahaha I love that!! Not offensive at all. I haven't seen the film but I googled the images and I like it. I now want to change my halloween costume...awesome. Thank you for that :oD
I do need to try some more lipsticks...be braver! xxx

  9. Samantha this looks fab. The Duo boots are great with these buckles being an added bonus to the wonderful fit surely. Your pale skin and cobalt work so well together, and I had to laugh at the Avatar idea (thought it was a beautiful movie - you ought to see it) and hey we all need some new inspiration from time to time! Happy Halloween!

  12. Grandpa was so right , the cobalt blue really works so well , specially with the black leather jacket. Knee high boots the bane of so many, legs either too fine or calves too athletic , glad you have found your perfect pair.Re the lipstick my advice is to try cheaper first for colour and just play.

  13. I Love cobalt and black together - always a stunning combination. I find it hard to believe you were always told to avoid blue, I've always found red hair and fair skin are gorgeous in blue, as you have well proven here! Your moto jacket is such a classic and looks wonderful with your layered dresses.

  14. You are absolutely NOT an Autumn. Not even remotely. As your undertone is cool (pink or bluish), but your coloring is vibrant (redish hair, bright blue eyes, pink cheeks and lips) I believe you are a Winter.
