When the Wind Blows! Checks and Leather Winter Outfit

Checked Coat and Leather Trousers | Over 40 Winter Outfit | Fake Fabulous

It's blowing a hoolie out there!

I may have managed to get my layers to lie flat for a moment BUT, as my hair visibly confirms, there was a strong wind here in Scotland a few days ago (when I took these photos).
This mild winter's day had a fresh sting in its tail.
Cool but not too cold.
All cobwebs were blown into next week!

Layers were the order of the day.
No surprise there!
The need for layers is a given in winter.
In fact, it's the same for most days, regardless of the season!

As the wind whipped my hair (and my clothes) around, I was warm and comfortable thanks to my leather trousers and some strategic layering.

Leather trousers are very warm and (ever since I had this pair altered) very comfortable.
I paired them with a neutral jumper and pair of black boots in this outfit.

Vertically ribbed jumpers can be a little tricky to wear.
I find that the ribbing seems to lay awkwardly on the body and highlight any lumps and bumps.
They're not the most flattering but can be very chic looking if tucked into high-waisted trousers/skirts or under a dress/jumpsuit.
Today I'm wearing mine in an attempting-to-be-casual ruched up way, and I'm wishing I'd chosen a classic merino jumper instead.
It would have been warmer too!
Ah well, you win some you lose some.

I have a few layers under this jumper including a thermal base layer and a cream polo-neck (which looks a teeny bit Vicar of Dibley-esque here! 😆).
A down gilet offers extra warmth and windproofing.

A simple green bag and a checked coat finished off my outfit nicely!

When I was out and about I had my gilet and coat buttoned up.
No there was so serious flapping about... apart from my hair of course.
It refuses to be tamed!

CHECKED COAT: A Christmas gift from a couple of years ago
LEATHER TROUSERS: eBay (altered to fit)
LEATHER BOOTS: Dr Martens
TAN JUMPER: Old (River Island I think?)
CREAM POLO-NECK: old
PINK GILET: Uniqlo
GREEN BAG: H&M
NECKLACES: Vintage

What do you think about skinny ribbed jumpers?
Do you find them awkward and unflattering worn on their own?
Or, do they suit your body shape and enhance your curves?

  1. Finally we get to see your hair in its wild looseness! I was looking forward to it. Looks good on you although I liked your pixy also very much. I hope your will not be tucking your locks away in small ponytail/knot thingies but let it all hang out :-D Great combination as always, especially with the necklaces

    1. Some days I miss my Pixie too Jozé.
My friend jokes that I'll go through the pain of a grow out and then get it chopped again!
      She's probably correct :oP
I AM guilty of hair tucking into little knots but only at the gym. Hahahaha... A mini man-bun!XXX

  2. I've never heard blowing a hoolie before, but love it! Would you mind if I borrow it and use it? We are having the same weather over here, and my hair looks a lot like yours, although not as chic! Of course neither am I a lithe, willowy Scottish lass, but a squat Italian American, which goes to show that frizzy, wind blown hair respects no nationality.
    Love your outfit.

    1. Feel free Susan... it's not my saying anyway so you're welcome to hoolie to your heart's content.
(It can also mean a wild party which is handy!
      Multicultural wild frizzes!
      I love that.
      The bigger the better :o)
I'm bored of over straightened super-sleek or "tonged curls" hairdos.
      I'm championing natural texture.
Natural curls, straightness, waves, kinks, funny cow-lick bits or BIG frizzes... they're all fab!!

P.S You are certainly not SQUAT... unless you're doing one.
      Petite? yes!
      Squat? No!
P.P.S I am neither Lithe or willowy but I"ll gladly take your compliment! Thank you.

  4. I'm weird, I just hate myself in a rib, even a loose cardigan - makes me feel a scruff, haha. Fine on other people and yours looks good on you!

    1. I agree Su!
I felt a bit "Sack of spuds" in this jumper.
How strange as it's supposed to be chic and sleek.
Maybe my short waist does something weird to the fabric?
I wonder.... are you short-waisted too?
      Maybe it's a phenomenon?!

  5. I don't mind a ribbed top, they work for me. This is a fabulously stylish outfit. Janice of the Vivienne Files was just noting recently how unexpectedly lovely is the pairing of cool grey and warmer camel/beige, of which I fully agree. Your longer hair is lovely btw. Lise

    1. I completely agree about cool grey and beige/camel... I've been putting them together for years (usually accidently without much thought) and love the look of it!
      Thank you Lise!!

  6. See what you mean, but no... looked for another similarity - maybe it's that we both have slightly square shoulders that suit tailored jackets? :)

    1. Ahhhh... that could be it?
I think a square shoulder is a great asset Sue... we are lucky in that respect!
Ribs are just too problematic and I'm going to stick to wearing them underneath other pieces.

  7. I love the idea of a down vest under the coat - why has that never occurred to me before?
