Winter Outfit Idea | Long Culottes, Secret Layers, Leopard and a Cropped Top

Long Culottes, Secret Layers, Leopard Boots and a Cropped Top!

For me, Culottes are still going strong in the style stakes.
The fashionistas may be over them, but I'm not ready to let go just yet.

A long pair of culottes (like the ones I'm wearing today) are surprisingly practical for all weathers.

This particular long khaki pair is covering my culotte slip (of course) AND a pair of silk leggings.

I'm all about the layers in winter.

Long Culottes, Secret Layers, Leopard Boots and a Cropped Top!

This outfit is easy to wear and very comfortable.
The fabrics don't crease so it looks smarter for longer.
I'm not a fan of the crumpled look!

{My favourite trousers are made of purple satin and are TERRIBLE for creasing. I'm a crumpled mess in no time!
I have to sit very carefully when I wear them.
See them styled HERE, with a ruffled top and HERE with a bralet.}

Long Culottes, Secret Layers, Leopard Boots and a Cropped Top!

I'm wearing a rust cropped top and a dark khaki roll neck underneath... plus a cheeky silk base layer, or two!

Don't be fooled by the pretty winter sun.
It's cold here today and warmth comes first for me.

I've pulled up my layers to show off these boots.
Before you ask, no my skin is not really bare!

I'm wearing tights here, and no-show socks inside my boots (under my tights... not a sexy look!) AND sheepskin shoe liners AND silk leggings (pulled up here).

I'm as warm as toast.

Long Culottes, Secret Layers, Leopard Boots and a Cropped Top!

For me, this is the perfect smart/casual winter outfit!

No one would ever know that there are 6 layers on the top and 5 on the bottom... including my teddy coat (out of shot).

  • Bralet
  • Fine-knit camisole.
  • Long sleeved baselayer
  • Long sleeved roll neck
  • Cropped top
  • (Coat)

(I might even sneak a cardigan under my coat, pushing the numbers up to lucky 7!)

  • Socks/undies
  • Tights
  • Silk baselayer
  • Culotte slip
  • Culottes

What do you think about layering up like this?
Too much?
Too bulky?
Too hot and sweaty?!

(I have been known to remove a layer in the ladies room if the venue turns out to be warmer than expected)

Do you wear base layers under 'normal' outfits?
Would you rather shiver?!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Especially if you have any layering tips and tricks.
Please share your secrets.

  1. Everything about this outfit is CRAZY cool, Samantha, but can we talk about your HAIR???!!!!! How incredible does it look slicked back like that - you look amazing! It reminds me so much of the fierce women in Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love video (and that's a really good thing)!!

Top marks for all the layers, it looks so good yet you're warm...BONUS!!

    Catherine x

    1. How kind of you Catherine... thank you!
I felt like sticking it down a bit partly to try something different, partly to show off my undercut and highlights a little more.
I'm mid-grow and refuse to just go wild and untamed... I think we get to a point in life where grow outs need to be regularly trimmed. No more winging it.
My undercut (and half a pot of control paste) is attempting to tame my poufy hair :oP

  2. Oh yes I do layer a lot. I always wear two layers as a basic a camisole and a basic shirt with sleeves, and then the top and a cardigan or jacket. I rather be too warm then to cold. I always like your feminine yet a bit androgynous style.

    1. Thank you Nancy.
I think my body lends itself to androgynous looks.
More curves and it's harder to do isn't it?
Oh I LOVE a cardigan too!
Apparently they're not very stylish but I've been ignoring that for years!!! :oP
Too warm beats too cold every time.

  3. I love your hair here too! It's a very elegant style and shows off your fabulous bone structure. Seriously, cheekbones to die for!

The outfit is awesome as well - I would wear every piece of it. Love.

I totally wear an extra "secret outfit" underneath my clothes! I don't have a pants liner (I have been on the lookout for a good vintage one for ages, but since I only need it for a week or two a year, it's not a high priority), but I wear vintage slips and camisoles constantly for extra warmth, as well as for their magical smoothing properties.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Thank you Sheila! X
I'm always wary of vintage slips... are they 'slippy' enough??
BUT now that you've told me about your love for them I might go and have a rummage... can you recommend any specific fabrications to look for?
      Thank you for your inspiration.

  4. Is it weird that the first thing I noticed about you here was your slick hair? So so cool. I've always admired celebs with cool slicked-back hairdo on red carpet and here you are effortlessly executing the same style, on a regular ol' day - how very "Samantha", I'd say.

I layer up just like this when I experience winters overseas, it's just necessary! One time, the temperature suddenly went up while I was out and I realised I've worn too many layers but all I did was go to a store and "borrow" their fitting room to remove a layer. (I wonder if anyone else has done this before...)

For the record I've decided culottes will FOREVER be in style because I love them.
Love the chunky necklace and fierce leopard print boots, by the way.

    1. Hahahaha... yes, I've done the same Liyanna!
      Ladies loos and changing rooms.
Wriggling out of a layer and popping it in my bag to put back on later.
I'm guessing that when you travel you encounter the cold more than at home?
I envy your ability to wear cool and airy layers (at home) that protect you from the heat instead of having to figure out how many layers are realistic before tucking in becomes problematic!! :oP
Sometimes I take it too far and need to reassess and strategically tuck :oD

  5. What a fabulous look Sam. The colours, layering, and the hair! Love it xx

    1. Thank you so much Laurie!
I could see you in these colours too :o)

  6. You look so gorgeous here Sam! I'm also loving that slicked back hairstyle. You have a Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn vibe going here that I think suits you!
It's hard to believe that you have that many layers on since you look VERY thin. I'm thinking that your recent increased fitness activity has paid off in allowing even more layers! :-)

    1. Thank you Jude!
I've not lost any weight ... in fact I've gained some (which makes me happy as I know it will be a bit of muscle) and I'm slightly bigger all over... yay!
The secret is that my layers are wafer thin and my outer layers are loose but not everywhere.
      It's an optical illusion.
Loose on the body and legs but neat at the waist, wrists, ankles and neck.
Showing off the most slender parts and tricking the eye into believing that the rest is slender too.
I'm always trying to put weight on and I seem to be doing quite well at it these days. :oP

  7. Your culottes look super comfy and so do the boots. Love this outfit. Jill x

    1. These boots ARE so comfy Jill.... it must be the platform.
Height and comfort is the perfect combination isn't it?! :oP

  8. You rock culottes!, you look elegant, cool and totally gorgeous in this pair!, I love the comfy&cool style, the subtle color combo, the rust orange top and the pretty necklace! and the fabulous hairstyle and makeup! Gorgeous!
And it always amazes me how many layers you have to wear!, it's shocking!. I usually wear my viscose turtleneck under my tops and a pair of tights and that's all! I only wear some thermal clothes when it's 5-10 below zero and this happens only once/twice a year!

    1. Hahahahaha... yep I like a layer, or 6!
My husband laughs at my layers and sometimes counts them for comedy effect.
      He thinks I'm bonkers :oP
i'm shivering at the thought of being without them and ONLY wearing a viscose turtleneck under my top.... Brrrrrr.
The funny thing is that I get really cold and need many layers but my hands and feet are always warm.
      Thank goodness for base layers!!

  9. You look bloody fabulous! Loving all the browns together, and those boots are cuties. Thanks for sharing. Jacqui Mummabstylish
