You Can't go Wrong with a Classic Red Dress!

Red fit and flare Olivia dress, pink belt, embroidered mules | Fake Fabulous

I'm wearing a red dress and it's making me very happy.

Red is my favourite colour and this particular red dress has all of the swish a great dress should!

Red is a powerful colour that instils confidence (in the wearer and people surrounding them).
Red means business.

So today, nothing can stop me!

This red dress is also distracting from the fact my hair is in desperate need of some skilled scissors.
I feel like I'm wearing a hairy crash helmet.
My light blonde (which is now going grey) section is HUGE and the chemically highlighted bits are heading down the road to brass-ville.
Yellow hair isn't a great look... unless it's deliberate!

I'm off to the hairdresser on Saturday and can't wait.
It's been 10 weeks which is an AGE for anyone with a pixie cut.
I'll be half a stone lighter when I come out!

{I do use thinning scissors and clippers on my hair between cuts but I wouldn't recommend... unless you're willing to make mistakes!
I've been doing it for years and have made many.}

When I feel a bit untidy in the hair department (or tired in the face department) bright clothes never fail to cheer me up!

I spent the day in this dress but I was wearing my white frilly gutties, not these mules (see the gutties in action HERE).
I changed in the late afternoon to go for an early dinner and a few drinks.
The dress eases into a casual evening look with zero effort.
Simply changing my bag and shoes was all I needed.
{A hat would have been nice too!! 😜}

A dress like this suits just about every age, shape and size, although the hemline might need a tailor if you're shorter than me (I'm 5 feet 6).
I'm just getting away with the midi-length.

Midi hemlines can too easily slip into an old-fashioned or frumpy look.
If in doubt, go just below the knee.

A red dress needs next to no embellishment.
I added a belt, but there was no real need, I just wanted a little bit of pink!
Mules and a clutch finished the outfit off simply.

DRESS: c/o Alie Street... it's discounted just now!
BAG: Linea... older than time! Try this one.
SHOES: M&S... last year's... try these.
BELT: Boden Kids department... old. Try this one... it's from the gent's section but there's no rule for that!
EARRINGS: Charity shopped. Try these.

  1. Hi Samantha, I think your hair looks fine. Then again, I was desperate to get my hair cut last week and now it's way too short. That dress looks fantastic on you with the princess seaming. Red is such a great colour. Unfortunately, I can't seem to pull off the midi look and at only 5'1' I end up having to get almost every skirt or dress shortened.

    1. You're very generous Alison... I feel like I'm wearing a wig made of straw though!
      LOL
I hear you when it comes to that 'too short' feeling.
Every single time I get mine done :o)
But it's always right as rain in a week or two... then it's too long again!!
There's nothing wrong with needing to get things shortened... it's the clothes fault not yours!

  2. I've always admired a classic red dress, but would you believe I still don't own one! Yours is gorgeous, Sam! I love those shoes too. As for your hair, I'd never have known you were desperate for a cut, but I totally understand how you feel. I'm booked in for a cut a week from now – 6 weeks since my last and I'm so ready for it! I think I'm going to go super short for the summer. I can't wait!

  8. I had six inches trimmed off my hair recently but since I wear it so long people didn't really notice much.

This is a classic fit and flare and I agree, it suits everyone. Those embroidered mules are rather lovely.

    1. Six inches will feel like a lot to you though Suzanne... I remember my hair at waist length. I loved it but ALWAYS tied it up in a top knot or a messy bun. So easy though!
A half inch feels LONG to me !! :oP

  9. I think this dress is perfect, simple lines but super chic. And the shoes are so beautiful! Though I would have love to see the combination with the sneakers ("gutties" is Scottish?) too.

    1. I'll wear it again for sure Ester and put it up for you!
Gutties are non-sport trainers... like plimsoles, converse or stan smiths.
Casual trainers look great with dresses like this one... is it a look you wear?

    3. Oh, thank you! So lovely!
      Sorry about my English.
Yes, dress and trainers are a great combination, but I don't wear as often as I'd like, because here in my country (Spain) in summer is better to wear sandals rather than trainers :)

  10. I couldn't agree more! You are the dancing lady in a red dress emoji!! I love being her too. I do have a red wrap dress that I pull out at Christmas time, but maybe I need to reconsider and take it out of the holiday storage box. Or, it might be time for me to update it. It may be I don't wear it because it's too old; I've had it FOREVER!

So you call sneakers gutties? I thought gutties might be rain boots. Interesting. I wonder how that word came about. Those gutties though are adorable. I want to copy!! And I am the Sneaker Lady, right?! The red embroidered mules here are quite special. W<3W!

I wish I could insert the red dress dancing lady to finish my comment!

  13. I love red! It's my colour apparently as I was an Aries baby. I must have about eight red dresses and I intend to keep wearing them.

My very favourite one was from Zara in 2007. I bought it in Japan where clothes generally didn't fit me (UK size 10/12). It looks like a designer one and was worth a month of financial hardship while I was working there.

Lovely look, especially with the red mules. X
