This post was inspired by a comment made by a friend.
She was talking about wearing a maxi dress (for a party) and told be she thought maxi hemlines worn with heels looked very 70's, and not a good look for anyone who did it the first time!
I decided to give it a go.
I deliberately chose these 70's-looking sandals to team with my striped maxi.
Just to test out the "too 70's" theory!
Clashing the stripe of the skirt with a floral cami (and a bright green cardigan), satisfied my need for colour.
A turquoise necklace, and my (pretty but useless) mini straw-topped bag finished things off nicely!
I felt a little bit retro... especially in my big white glasses... but not too 70's.
And (even in a cardigan!) I didn't feel frumpy or boring.
In fact, I loved this comfortable and colourful outfit.
What do you think of maxi hemlines and heels?
Please let me know in the comments.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
TOP: George... similar.
BAG: Old... this one is nothing like mine but would look FAB!
CARDIGAN: Boden (old)... similar.
SHOES: Clarks (old)... these are lovely.
NECKLACE: Charity shop find (similar).... read about it HERE.
I thought I would leave you of this shot of my photo bombing house guests!
We are dog-sitting Jake's Mum (the grey whippet eating the verbena!) and sister.
I've loved having them.
SHOP this LOOK
I like it! Not frumpy, old or dated.
ReplyDeleteThank you Morgan! XXX
DeleteHonestly I don't know where on earth people get these ridiculous ideas.
ReplyDeleteDon't people understand that anyone can where whatever they like?

I think some people are unsure and look for inspiration online, only to be bombarded with "rules".
DeleteI say forget the rules and do what feels good!

Perfect Outfit..
ReplyDeleteThank you Varuna! XXX
DeleteNot one bit too 70's Samantha! You've modernized the look beautifully. I just love that floral top! The print is reminiscent of a retro tablecloth and the asymmetrical hemline adds to the fun of the mix! I really like this little outfit and clearly the whippets do too! :-) XX
ReplyDeleteThank you Judy!
DeleteI've loved having my little house guests.... they seemed to like this look too :oP

You look adorable in that outfit. It is a charming ensemble and not reminiscent of the 70s in any way. (I was there - I'd know.) I think that your friend should not take style advice from the ladies who told her that. Dare I say that they probably have no taste or sense of style. There - I said it. As you delightfully portray on your blog, it's all in how you put the pieces together.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much Kathleen. How very kind of you.
DeleteYou are spot on with that advice to ignore the "rule" makers. :oP

love your positive vibes. Amazing.
with love your AMELY ROSE
Thank you for your kind words Amely. XXX
Deletelovely color combo, and lovely stripes and florals mixed prints!, I like particularly the fab layering, and the 'pretty but useless' bag!
ReplyDeleteNo idea why wearing maxi hemlines with heels could be a problem, I think they could look as cool and modern as you wish, if you pick the correct proportions!. I like a chunky shoe or block heels with maxi dresses with volume, but a kitten heel could look amazing with a straight maxi dress. And anybody could look fabulous wearing whatever they like!
Your last picture is my favorite!, so beautiful smile and so cute dogs!
besos
You're spot on Monica!
DeleteAnyone can wear anything they like.
Thank you for your kind words.
I'm so glad you like my furry lodgers :oP

Love all of the bright colors here Sam and the stripes balance it quite nicely! I do like heels with a midi dress or skirt myself but flats can work as well. I do prefer a heel on the midi length, but feel maxi skirts can go either way...I am thinking of a bit of height with an espadrille as I have been wearing them a lot lately!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

I'll take your maxi and raise you a full on flowy maxi with clog heels that I wore today. You look fab and I don't care if I looked 70 or 70s, I loved my get up!
ReplyDeleteFlowy with clogs?? Yes!!! I love that look.
DeleteI'm going to get my clogs on tomorrow... thank you for the inspiration.
