Is a denim skirt the perfect alternative to jeans?
A denim skirt is supposed to strike the perfect balance between casual and smart.A more feminine alternative to jeans.
This all seems like a great idea until you actually try and style one!
This A-line denim skirt always causes me problems because it falls in middle ground.
If I try to 'smarten it up', it never quite looks smart enough.
If I try to 'keep it casual', it can look like a frumpy version of a good pair of jeans.
It's a tricky customer!
For me, a denim skirt (like this one) is one of those items that you think you need in your wardrobe then (when you eventually buy it) you wonder why you bothered.
If I want to wear denim should I just pick a pair of jeans?
Are denim skirts too casual to be anything else?
In the end, I decided to treat this denim skirt the same way as a pair of jeans anyway.
It saved me a lot of messing about.
{This staged shot of me 'reading' my blank notebook caused lots of laughs. My husband was rolling his eyes!}
This denim outfit turned out to be a great one for my errand-running day, but would also be perfect for a casual work (or college) environment.
A split-sleeve blouse with a summery kiwi print all over it.
Definitely kiwis.....or are they?
My husband thinks they are slices of cucumber.
What do YOU think?
Neutral shoes, a simple bag, and gold accessories finish things off nicely.
Simple, feminine and comfortable.
What more do you need from an outfit?
What do you think of denim skirts?
A great alternative to jeans?
Or, a bit boring and even frumpy?
Please let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment.
I love hearing from you!
SKIRT: Boden....it's old but they have a new version.TOP: Zara... From a Charity shop... this one is pretty.

Not frumpy AT ALL. Love this outfit. Blue and green is such a good combination and this top is cute. Had to laugh over your husband and your blank notebook haha. Been there, done that.

Hahahaha... I am sitting with this stupid look on my face and my husband is laughing and making jokes about there being "too many hard words in that book like 'porridge' and 'just right'"...cheeky man!
DeleteThen I show him the blank pages and he is shaking his head and laughing.
We have our fun when taking these photos, don't we? :oP

ReplyDeleteI have the exact same skirt! I don't tend to wear it in summer though, and usually go all geek-chic with it, pairing it with thick tights and brogues/boots in autumn/winter. Perhaps I should challenge myself to try styling it for summer - maybe with a Breton top and Converse...
ReplyDeleteI had that outfit in mind too... a breton and my (sore) converse.
DeleteI bet it would look very classic and cool.
The thick tights and brogues sounds perfect too!

I live in my denim skirt- more of a skirt than trouser girl.
ReplyDeleteI love the top, definitely kiwi in my book.
Thank you Elizabeth! Kiwis are in the lead so far (in my mind anyway) :o)
DeleteI think I get a new denim skirt every couple of years!! What's not to love about them??

I really love the top! It looks great with that denim skirt. I laughed when I saw the word "frumpy" because that's exactly how I feel when I wear my denim skirt! It goes well with most of the tops I own but I rarely wear it. I certainly don't think denim skirts are frumpy-just on me!! Ha ha! I love the notebook too! I'm obsessed with stationery as well as fashion!! I laughed when you said that your husband was rolling his eyes at your 'staged' reading of your notebook!! I'm always coming up with 'staged' poses when we go on family trips and my husband is always laughing at me too!!

I'm glad it's not just me Sasha!
DeleteI feel quite "mumsy" in mine... which seems daft for a 43 year old mum, but none of us want to look frumpy do we?
I need to keep trying with this skirt.
Do you think it is the shoes that make or break the denim skirt?
I'm beginning to think so.

I love this outfit Sam, probably because you can find me in some version of it several days a week! I love a denim skirt and never feel frumpy in it - can be too casual for many work situations though.
ReplyDeleteI agree Sam... about it being too casual for most workplaces.
DeleteI suppose I am lucky to be able to wear whatever I want.
What shoes do you prefer with your denim skirts?

I'm loving your casual outfit, as it looks fresh, comfy and quite pulled together too. Your blouse is so cool, and I like so much your accessories, those earrings and your cute notebook!
ReplyDeleteI think that 'denim + an interesting printed top' really works as a casual&cool ensemble!, you rock it!.
I'm not a huge fan of denim skirts, actually I'm not a huge fan of denim!. I've managed myself to have a pair of blue jeans, and only one denim jacket!. Anyway, I like the look!, and your lovely kiwis/apples/cucumbers blouse!
besos
It is a simple combination isn't it? I just treated the skirt as if it was a pair of jeans instead of thinking too much about it. Always a better idea :oP.
DeleteI would love to see you in a denim dress though.... definitely worth a try! XXX
You've styled this denim skirt so well! That top is lovely. Looks like kiwis to me! I wear my denim skirt year round- tights and boots in the winter, a wedge-heeled sandal in summer. A big hello from Cathleen in Canada, love your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteYay! another kiwi vote...thank you :oP
DeleteI am going to try and wear this more often and love the idea of tights and ankle boots.
Thank you so much for popping over to say Hello... and your kind words! XXX
Team Cucumber (maybe I just have Pimm's on my mind though...)! I think the skirt works really well on you. With your legs, I don't think anything could ever look frumpy! xx
ReplyDeleteHahaha.... thank you Lisa! Pimms it is then :oP XXX
DeleteI love your skirt - the cut, fit, length, wash and front pockets. It is perfect for so many looks and occasions. I don't find it frumpy at all. I find it demure and feminine - and a lovely look on you. Kiwi blouse is so cute and fresh with it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kathleen. You are very kind. X
