How can you style that light summer jumpsuit as the weather changes?
The obvious answer (for me) is to add layers!
Scottish weather usually means that layers are never very far away!
As the late-summer weather becomes even more unpredictable, they become essential.
I know layering can be daunting.
The layers you add to an outfit can easily become sloppy, and bulky-looking.
But, layering doesn't need to add bulk (and chunkiness) to your look.
3 Steps to perfect Layering
- Keep your 'under-layers' very fine, and lightweight.
- Stick to a maximum of three layers (if you are unsure).
- Only ever add chunkiness to the very top layer.
So, today layers were the order of the day.
Underlayers and overlayers.
Plus, cardigans are cool again!
(I knew if I waited long enough...)
It is well made, partially lined and has handy pockets (I love a pocket).
However, it is also far too low-cut!
I wore it with a camisole and flip flops a few weeks ago, and today I popped on a long-sleeved thermal.
{Hat's off to the woman who dares to wear this plunging neckline!}
I chose to add a fine-weight cardigan, but a chunky one would look just a good as the weather cools down even further.
A teeny bag was out of the question today as I had a tonne of "stuff' to lug around.
Luckily, this structured bag is the perfect size... and is so much fun to carry!
Adding some turquoise jewellery pulled things together nicely.
JUMPSUIT: River Island (this one is lovely)
CARDIGAN: Zara (this one is pretty)
THERMAL: M&S... look on eBay for the yellow version.
SHOES: c/o JD Williams (on sale!)
BAG: TkMax (this one is gorgeous...and much more classy!)
BANGLE, NECKLACE and RINGS: Various gifts/Charity shop finds.
NAILS: BarryM blueberry
4 Simple ways to transition a Summer jumpsuit.
1. Accessorise.
Summer jumpsuits tend to be in "summery" patterns, and colours, which are quite hard to style in the cooler months. You could try pulling out darker tones from the pattern (if yours has a pattern), or add more autumnal colours using:
- A belt (skinny or wide, whatever you prefer).
- A scarf.
- Layers (see below).
- Shoes...ankle boots look great!
2. Add a lightweight base-layer.
- T-shirt (long or short sleeved).
- Roll-neck.
- Good old thermals!
- Sheer collared shirt.
- Tie-neck blouse.
- Fine-gauge knit.
3. Add a topper.
- Fine knit cardigan.
- Chunky Cardigan.
- Sleeveless jacket.
- Blazer.
- Gilet (either longline, or short).
- Cropped jumper.
- Leather jacket (slim fit).
4. Secret layers (for when it gets really cold).
- Footless tights, or full footed tights depending on your shoe choice.
- Thermal camisole.
WARNING:
Going to the loo in a jumpsuit is hard enough.Make sure your layers and accessories are easily removable and give yourself plenty of time to disrobe!
{In this outfit I had to hang every item I was wearing (apart from my undies) on the peg... so funny!}

I laughed at your warning---because really that's the crux of the matter for the jumpsuit to begin with!!
ReplyDeleteBut we could always cut a snap in crotch to make it easier? Ha ha!
I think the ankle boots really make this outfit perfect & fallish!
You have the funniest details on your accessories---what a great way to make someone smile!!

Hahaha...a popper crotch would be practical Jodie... but not very attractive! Very funny :O) XXX
DeleteYeah...thus why I'm not so keen on layering a jumpsuit! LOL Kudos to you for lasting the day without a bathroom emergency. The fact that one has to get naked to go to the bathroom can be a turn off on a regular day, the added layers make it too labour intensive for me, although it does look very sharp! Also...LOVE the bag!

Jumpsuits are rubbish on a night out...especially if wine is on the cards! All of that bathroom-visiting usually ends in disaster (I once dropped my jumpsuit onto the loo floor...disgusting! :o(() I am so glad you like my bag too!! XXX
DeleteI used to be under weight and airways cold so I was an expert in layering. Now, being just since a week, 50 hot flashes make me stay away from layering! Lol :-) what a fun bag!

DeleteThe words "practical" and "creative" seem to mesh together perfectly with this outfit and many others as the weather in Scotland begins to cool.
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is really cute. I can't wear that fun green color that you ve used in your bottom layer but I just love it with your red hair.
How do you do it Samantha? You don't seem to have hit that awkward stage as you grow your hair out!! Looking great !
I'm not sure you could look awkward Samantha!
DeleteWhat do you think about trying out the "Mel Kobayashi" style for one post? I think she even did a video "how to" awhile back. I'm sure she'd be very flattered and it might be fun!
Seriously I think you are having a pretty seamless transition and maintaining your loveliness. :-)
