Summer Brights | Wearing Orange with Brown and Blue.

Fake Fabulous | Bright orange top, cropped brown jacket, bright blue clutch and octopus necklace.

Recently, I have been drawn to more muted colour palettes.
Denims, greys and even black!

I wonder if this is because Summer is full of natural light (it gets dark here at 11pm) and vibrant colour, so I don't feel the need to inject any of my own.
I seem to crave colour much more in the darkness of winter.

Today, however, I was inspired to wear some orange.
You don't get much bolder than a burst of orange!

If you look online you can find plenty of sites advising you 'How to wear orange'.

We all know orange looks great with white, can work well with denim and can go a bit halloween-ish when paired with black.

But...
There is no denying that orange is a tricky colour to wear.
It catches the eye.
It makes a bold statement.
It can feel overwhelming.
Wearing orange is not for the feint-hearted!

Today's outfit is a simple combination.
Jeans, a plain top and a jacket.
No complicated layering.
No high fashion shapes.
Just a straightforward, and easy, look.

{Not a million miles away from this blogging cliché}

I think that orange looks good with other warm colours such as yellow, red and brown.
Orange also looks great with contrasting hues, like bright blue.
In fact, bright blue is the perfect popping contrast to a smack of orange!

This bright orange camisole works perfectly (in my opinion) with my brown skinny jeans.

{See my jeans here, with a floral scuba top...and here, with yellow and tartan}

I love the look of orange and brown together, so I added my favourite (old) jacket, that I have had forever.
This little jacket is always on hand to add a little 'something' to a look... And, to think I once thought about selling it on Ebay. Yikes!

I needed to add a little something extra to these warm tones so, I reached for my bright blue clutch.
A bright clutch is a great investment (I need more bold colours in my collection) and goes with everything!

{See this clutch here, for a date, and here, with faux fur}

Bold blue nails, orange lips and some unusual jewellery finished things off nicely!

  1. So did you have your nails painted blue just for the post? I do love them!!
    This look is beautiful, simple yet so stylish!!
    And really, how can someone not like orange? Doesn't it bring a smile to your face?
    How interesting that it stays light so long in Scotland---I didn't even think about that since you're so far north. Does it affect your sleeping habits much?
    Happy Friday!!

    1. To be honest Jodie, I bought this cheap nail polish in town and loved the look of it. Two coats and it lasted 3 days! And that included a day with me at work, in and out of gloves with umpteen handwashing attacks, plus a day of intensive housework! I was very impressed. I am hoping to get more colours this weekend.
      It just was a happy coincidence that it went to perfectly with the orange :oD. I wish I was that organised and had the time to look matched up. :oD
      As for the light...it is certainly odd at times. Last night it was still not truly dark at 11, in fact I am not sure it ever gets totally dark. Whereas in winter is can seem permanently dark on a dull day! We have plenty of variation to keep us on our toes. I could sleep with the sun streaming in on top of me, so I am okay in that respect. :oD XXX

    1. Thank you Laurie. We have to make the most of it while we can...Scotland is often wet and cold while the rest of the UK enjoys the sun. I am happy that we are catching a few rays just now! XXX

  3. Hi Sam
    I do really like orange, especially with redhair, and used to never wear it. Great pairing of brown and cobalt! Love that clutch. Great job with your color mixes.

    1. Thank you Nancy. The truth is that these trousers are a little short for me (they had no long length left) so I cuff them a little to give the capri impression instead of the half-mast look. sometimes we have to work with what we have. XXX

  8. Hi Samantha, thank you for this inspiration. Love what you ate wearing. I have a bright orange shirt which I don't really know how to style. Thanks to your explanations and example I am a bit further down the road of styling it..
    I have a number of bright bags (not clutches but they count too, don't they?). The stupid thing is I always think matchy matchy which doesn't work too well with bright colours (too much of a good thing). I now have a new direction.

    1. Thank you Greetje. You are right, matchy matchy does not work with brights....but, they look great with neutrals and other brights! Yes, of course and bright bag of any style counts. :oD XXX

    1. Thank you Susan. I found it hard to find a proper orange that was bright and vibrant enough, without any cool tones. I hope you find a good one! X

  12. As you know I'm a huge fan of orange and so never feel daunted at a dollop of it here and there in an outfit. I love the cute camisole and all the more so with this sweet little jacket of yours. (Old faithfuls are so good at filling a certain gap, aren't they?) The final masterstroke is the blue clutch and nailpolish - wonderful stuff Samantha!
