Slip dresses are everywhere (again) this spring/summer.
But how can we tap into the trend, over 40, without looking like a sack of spuds?
{Spuds=Potatoes, to anyone wondering what I am talking about!}
I don't know about you, but my days of wearing nothing but a slip dress and teeny-tiny briefs are over.
I love the look of a slip dress.
However, the beautiful lines (and delicate fluidity) of them is ruined by the addition of undies.
I am going to leave these flimsy beauties to the (lucky) bra-less.
I attempted to tap into the slip dress trend (a little) back at Christmas time.
{See how I styled my vintage 90's almost-slip dress}
I love my black dress, but springtime calls for lighter fabrics.
This beautiful top was perfect!
The fabric is pure silk, and feels delightful against the skin.
The top itself is just delicate (and sexy) enough to look on-trend, but it still allowed me to wear a (pretty) bra underneath.
Thank goodness for that!
The lace panel was calling out for some layered necklaces, so I added some silver and pearls.
These wide-legged, high-waisted trousers seemed the ideal partner for such a delicate top.
Light and flowing, but providing coverage and structure to my look.
I teamed them with my much-loved leather obi belt.
{I am breaking the short-waisted rules again. Naughty!]
This sequined charity shop gem (it cost one whole pound!!) worked well as a coverup.
It added some colour and texture to an otherwise 'plain' look.
My gorgeous mint and gold shoes, and a caged clutch, finished things off perfectly!
Are you wearing slip dresses, or tops, this season?
How will you style them?

wouuu, lovely outfit, fabulously elegant with a touch of sassiness, which I adore!!, love how you've styled your silk top, love your sequined cardi, a statement piece to have fun with!, and also love your gorgeous shoes, oh yes, they're 'irregular choice' and that means fabulousness!
ReplyDeleteYou've created a whimsical ensemble, once more! gorgeous!
besos
Thank you so much, Monica ...a "whimsical ensemble", I love that!! I am glad you like my sequined cardigan/shrug/thingemejig.
DeleteWhatever it is!
I was thrilled to find it in the bargain bucket for the princely sum of £1!
One person's rubbish is another's treasure. XXX
What a pretty outfit. The high-waisted trousers are especially cute. Nice clutch, too. You're firing on all cylinders here!
ReplyDelete"Firing on all Cylinders"! Yay!! I love that. Yet another fab turn of phrase. Thank you so much. XXX
DeleteSamantha, this entire outfit is so very beautiful! Each piece is perfect on it's own, but together...wow! I love the delicate top and would absolutely wear it; I have no qualms in regard to underwear as outerwear. And the sequin jacket? The color is stunning and so perfect with your hair.

Thank you Debbie. (This shrug/jacket would be a great one with your hair too) I hope to get some warm summer evenings, this year in Scotland, so I can sit outside and enjoys a glass of pimms in the setting sun....wearing my sparkles! :oD XXX
DeleteDid you match your eye makeup to those sequins? Looks like you did, and it looks gorgeous! I wish there's a close-up picture of your makeup.
ReplyDeleteI love how that obi belt appears to be a part of your pants; it's absolutely something that I see myself wearing.

Thank you for noticing Liyana! I was wearing a No.7 liner and some revlon teal shadow. I would have done a close up but the light was awful AND I was so tired that I had quite awful eye bags. Coffee can perk me up but (after 40) 8 hours sleep can't be faked. Oh how I miss that "spring-back" face of my 20's and 30's! :oP XXX
DeleteYou are a fashion genius, Samantha ! I really was thinking about a way to wear the underwear on display trend, and I couldn't find anything I truly liked, until I saw your post, love the silk top ! And you added sequins, those pants and those shoes...I love everything, your sense of fashion is amazing :-) If we lived nearby we would swap things like hell, ahah :-) Kisses

Oh Vale...I would LOVE to have a little "swap" with some of your clothes (especially those shoes!!) You would probably never see them again!! :oP
DeleteThank you so much for this lovely comment. XXX
Every piece here, even the sequinned cardi, has such a light, airy touch to it. And the overall look is so wispy, feminine. I've always loved the idea of wearing inners as outers, just not a la Madge, and I do appreciate how your outfit is so tasteful and delicate, Samantha.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sheela! I was going for both of these things! I am so glad you approve. XXX
DeleteYou look like a million dollars. And that with a little cover up of 1 pound ! The trousers and obi are fantastic. As are your shoes. And indeed the delicate undie is very sexy but nobody can say you are flashing. A wonderful outfit.
ReplyDeleteWould the obi work although you say you are short-waisted because of the length the little cover cardi brings?
Greetje
I think you are right Greetje! Thank you. As a fellow short-waister you will know all of the tricks :oD XXX
DeleteI love the colours you have chosen here with your hair. Gorgeous. And those shoes!
ReplyDeleteI have been on the look-out for a long black slip dress. I want to wear it with a cotton turtleneck in a bright colour underneath and tights with a beret. So far no thrifting luck, but I'm not giving up.
bisous
Suzanne
That sounds like a beautiful outfit Suzanne! Keep searching. XXX
DeleteThanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. Great look. This looks like the camis from the 80s. Happy Easter
ReplyDeleteIt is my pleasure, Nicole. Thank you. XXX
DeleteThis outfit works wonderfully. It has a great 1920s vibe to it which the long necklaces enhance. You could hang out with Miss Fisher just as you are here and not look out of place. (If you haven't discovered Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, do!)
ReplyDeleteMy Jenny Packham wedding dress (I got married last October) was a bias cut, silk, slip dress, with a gauzy, transparent, beaded overlay (a separate dress unto itself). It was daring for a curvy woman like myself, but worked. But, oh the underwear dilemma! I wore undies so tiny, I referred to them as a cobweb, and the seamstress added more substantial straps to the silk slip to cover the bra straps that my DD chest required.

Thank you Charlotte. I must have a look for Miss Fisher, that sounds like my kind of thing!
DeleteYour wedding dress sounds a delight and I bet you looked stunning. Some clothes call out for curves.
I completely agree with the undies. Less is definitely more!!
I bet your husband prefered the "cobwebs" to "big pants" anyway. :oD
I despise shapewear...squeezing and oozing are not feelings I want to experience when I dress, especially when I want to feel attractive. A date (or a beautiful wedding) are occasions that call for cobwebs and other pretty things.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your slip-dress story.

Oh isn't the turquoise of the sequin cardigan and the shoes wonderful with the trousers! They work so well together. I've not bought anything from Irregular Shoes, although I've long eyed their styles. Um... this makes me want to get a pair from them this year!

Thank you Jacqueline. You should give them a go, there are some amazing designs...perfect for your seasonal skinnies! XXX
