Should we be wearing neon, over 40?
Of course we should! (If we want)We can wear whatever we want at any age.
I wish I could pull off a full-on blast but, it is not a colour that suits me on a large scale.
It, unfortunately, washes me out.
But, that won't stop me wearing an accessory or two!
Winter is the perfect season for a cheerful burst of neon colour.
If you love the idea of neon but find it a bit in-your-face, try a couple of small accessories.
Even a tiny pop can make all of the difference.
Today, I also decided to have a go at taking my own photographs (again) this time indoors.
My main problem is that my house is so jam-packed full of people, that there is not a spare inch of empty wall to be found.
The clean lines and pure white spaces that other bloggers seem to have in their homes, is so far from my reality, that it makes me laugh.
Every square foot of my home has it's own accumulation of 'stuff'.
However, desperation had set in.
I had no blog photographs.
None at all.
Many great outfits had gone by without being captured.
The light indoors is awful and the "set" is worse.
But, I had to do something!
My camera is on a tripod in my girl's room and the only light is coming from the spots, in the hall.
I just enhanced the image and attempted to edit out the clutter. I know I need more practise at this!
As you can see from the un-retouched shot (below) this "studio" is actually a bit of a mess.
Complete with thermostat, art and a towel rail!
Not very glamorous.
And, not quite that slick (and perfect) bloggers life.
My look was all about bright colour and warmth.
When piling on the layers, in winter, many people neglect their legs but they can get chilled too.
Don't forget to layer them up and look after them!
Thermal leggings or tights are great under jeans, very cosy.
I am wearing thermal leggings under these grey skinnies.
I wore my favourite boots (again) and some grey, wool knee socks, adding more warmth.
See my favourite boots here (with a white dress) and here (with red).
Because my legs were so toasty this meant I could wear a shorter coat.
This wool reefer is a favourite of mine.
It has a pale grey base with a darker grey, red and yellow tartan design.
I think is goes with just about anything, especially this neon trimmed bag!
I decided to wear my hot pink sweatshirt dress.
Popping a red polo neck underneath and a grey cropped cardigan over the top.
Lots of lovely layers for warmth, and plenty of colour for winter cheer.
I finished the look off with a neon necklace, watch and a cluster of pom poms (what else?!).
"Mum, what's happening with your hair?"
"It's going crazy!"Freezing and ferocious wind, whipping around was no fun at all.
Our teeth were chattering.
"Leap mum! Do some leaps!"
My little photographer knows how to have fun!
Not a slick and perfect blogger's life.
Just my normal (and a bit on the messy side) life.
But we sure know how to laugh!
Do you ever take indoor photographs in your own perfect space? Or do you have a messy life, like mine?
Please let me know in the comments...I love to hear from you.

Why not try What happens when you take your own photographs?
There definitely is no perfect space to take photos in our house! It's very small, and every inch is the home of something... :-) Your first attempt at indoor photos turned out great!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love how much fun you have in the outdoor photos!
Great outfit! I love the colors & the pops of neon!
Thank you Andrea.
DeleteI was really struggling to find space. I moved a washing basket and a wall mirror to get these photos and most of them had our dog in them too.....a far cry from perfect white walls! XXX
I think your pictures turned out wonderful. I've given up on braving the cold & wind at times (luckily--it's not often) as I've become a true "cream-puff" in my old age!! Our insides shots aren't even near perfect----but I've given up on perfect (and it's made me a better person)!
ReplyDeleteAnd funny thing....I'm wearing textured tights under my distressed jeans right now! Love your neon punches of color---I have very little neon, and might need to remedy that! jodie

Oh, I would love to see your neon styling! Especially on your Mum :oD
DeleteI hope you give it a go. XXX
You did great with the indoor photos! I actually prefer the one WITH the artwork on the walls - and yes, even with the thermostat! I think it adds character to the photo, rather than just having starkness of supposed bare walls. I think it'd look lovely with the towel rail edited out and possibly the thermostat too but keep the artwork! After all, this is real life, as you say. To be honest I get a little o'd on all those 'perfect photos'. I think a healthy dose of reality is a good thing and acknowledges the hoops us bloggers go through sometimes - like the age old problem of trying to take photos outside when the weather is crap and the light even crapper!
ReplyDeleteGreat reefer coat and brilliant paired with the rest of the outfit. Yes, to thermals under trousers even more so your neck of the woods!
And the pop of the hot pink and neon of the bag are fun bursts of colour.

Thank you Jacqueline. I am an (almost) all season thermal wearer :oD.
DeleteI love the sleekness of the 'perfect' blog photo but outside is much more preferable to me.
I love it when bloggers find beautiful foliage or an interesting bit of architecture (or a graffiti splattered wall) as the background. I love traditional bricks or stone work too....if only the rain would sod off!! XXX
Your cute outfit makes me long for colder weather!

Thank you Darlene....but don't! Enjoy the warmth :oD XXX
DeleteI usually prefer indoor pics, my house is big but full with things and it's not easy to find a perfect place to shoot pics ! You look wonderful and yes, I agree we should wear what we please. Loving your fun style, and layers are my way to go on winter. Kisses

Thank you Vale....Oh, I envy your space. A big house in Scotland would cost a fortune to heat....not to mention all of that cleaning!! My blogging has eaten into my housework enough as it is! hahaha.
DeleteA big house in the warmth would be cool and airy and delicious....XXX
I tell myself that the mess around the house is a clear indication of how much said space is being used and loved. Sometimes, even I believe it. I haven't done much indoor photography for outfits because I don't know how to operate the timer on my camera, please don't judge me. I promised myself that I would learn in 2016 because my photographer will be in her senior year and, I'm pre-empting, would have very little time to help me snappity snap. Desperation is the mother and all that.
ReplyDeleteI love love neon colours. I think that being slightly darker in skintone, I can get away with using more except for make-up. It's a no no for neon make-up. I can't do that Grace Jones on a bad day look for much longer. The family might actually divorce me for real.
I love your outfit, Samantha, especially when you've got the blazer on. Anne was right. You're such a inspiration when it comes to being unapologetic and unafraid of colour :) thank you for that xoxo
What a lovely comment, Sheela! Thank you for that.
DeleteI have learned over the years to "let go" of my need for order and tidiness. Five humans and a dog does create plenty of "used and loved" space...that is such a great spin on it!
Have you tried a remote for your camera?
They are quite cheap and easy to use.
As for your ability to go all-out neon....I am quite envious and I think you SHOULD try the make up. Even if it was just a pop of liner....I bet you would look great! XXX
Don;t even get me started on indoor photography. Mine is so bad I am hiring a teacher in January. I have no rooms with enough space to move back 3 meters and not have lots of clutter or no light. And I think you did a wonderful job of indoor photography and photoshopping.
ReplyDeleteHave to go off to bed now. It is late again because of blogging. Every night is the same. I lack time to blog.
Greetje
Hahaha...it's hard isn't it Greetje?!
DeleteI don't have photoshop....or the skills to work it...I just used the basic photo editing on my laptop. It is not great but I am sure I can do better. Practise needed! XXX
I saw a shot of your studio on Instagram and thought it looked so professional. You've done a brilliant job with your techie wizardry. We're not going to get through the winter without conquering this indoor problem, but you look like you've mastered it already. Lovely outfit, by the way. Great colours, and I really covet these boots.
ReplyDeleteAnna
Anna's Island Style
This is true Anna! We need to get up to speed with the indoor snaps...It is almost 10am here and it still looks like darkness outside. Awful light conditions. Will we get any of those crisp and sunny days? I hope so. You will have a much different light (being near the sea)....We all have our challenges to overcome but I am sure we can do it! xxx
DeleteBecause I live in a state that is known for it's brutally cold winters, I do have to take a lot of my pictures indoors in the winter and it can be a challenge. Sometimes, I'll brave outside and "smile" for the camera and "pretend "I'm not freezing. I love your outfit. Such a fun look!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard though, isn't it? To get a good shot indoors....when I go outside, and get too cold, I get goose pimples on my face and end up looking like a plucked Chicken! hahaha. Not so glamorous :oD XXX
DeleteI like the lengths of the layers here, but I disagree when it comes to the matchiness of pink and red. To me, these are badly clashing colours I wouldn't combine, therefore it's not my favourite Outfit. Yet, I do like the wraparound watch, even if neon's not so much of my thing.
ReplyDeleteI love the way that we are all so different in our perceptions of what "matches" or goes well together....Ditto for what constitutes boldness or a bright outfit. I appreciate your thoughts on this combination....and I am glad you like my watch. I need more neon in my life, it makes me smile. XXX
