How to wear a Christmas jumper without looking like an idiot.

Styling a Festive/Christmas jumper without making a fool of yourself.

{Disclaimer: You must be prepared to look like a bit of an idiot, anyway!}

The festive jumper season is upon us.

Love them or loathe them, the festive Christmas jumper trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
Festive sweatshirts and knits are in every shop.
You can't escape.
Even if you want to!

There is even a 'National Christmas Jumper Day' every December!

How to wear a Festive knit and not look silly.

Many people will find a Christmas knit in their stocking this year, and many workplaces host Christmas jumper events with the aim to raise money for charity.

It is meant to be lots of fun and I am always championing having fun with fashion.

However, I have a confession....
Christmas jumpers make me cringe.
They are not my style at all.
I find them embarrassing and a little awkward.

This coming from someone who likes wearing bright blue tights seems ridiculous, but I can't help it!
I know they are meant to be witty and ironic BUT, I just feel like an idiot.

What if (like me) you want to get into the spirit of the Christmas jumper and join in the fun, but it makes you a little self conscious?

Can a Festive jumper ever be styled without making the wearer look like a fool?

First, you have to be prepared to look a bit silly.
There is no getting away from that fact!

There really is no such thing as a 'chic' festive knit.

Even when they are made from beautiful fabrics, and from higher-end shops, they are still a bit (read: very)naff.
But, don't let me put you off.
Go for it and have fun!

My festive jumper is relatively understated and a little tongue in cheek.

I didn't try to 'smarten it up', or be fashionable.
I just kept the whole outfit really simple and casual.
Wearing skinny jeans brought the whole look into my comfort zone.
Skinny jeans are my clothing equivalent of a comfort blanket.
Perfect for when I feel a little self conscious.

This vintage shirt (see it worn Here and Here) added another layer of familiarity, not to mention a pop of warm colour.
I really needed the warmth between the grey colour of the jumper and my face.
Wearing a colour you know suits you with one you know doesn't, helps make the tricky colour more wearable.

My cream lace boots and grey wool socks were the perfect partners.
See my lace boots here and here.

I am not normally a fan of a wedge heel (I think they make my legs look like golf clubs) but the lace fabric over the suede of these boots was hard to resist.
Little snowman earrings finished this outfit off with a smile!

It was a horrible day (weather-wise) and we were being battered by the wind and rain.
Running out, between downpours, to take these photographs.
SO windy outside...and freezing cold!
My little photographer shouts to me,
"Jump up and down to keep warm, Mum!"
I had to oblige!

  1. Fun! I think you styled the Christmas jumper perfectly!

I don't own any Christmas jumpers and am not planning to change that... Luckily, I don't have any events to attend where they are mandatory/expected... :-)

    1. Thank you Andrea! I think you are lucky too. I am not the biggest fan of the festive knit. But, you are right...they are FUN and my children love that. Sometimes we just have to go with the flow, don't we? XXX

  2. Those booties - love! I am determined never to wear a Christmas sweater, esp now that I am old enough for it to be non-ironic! You on the other hand look terrific! xo

    1. Patti, they can be awful can't they? Hahaha. It is Non-ironic after the age of 20, in my opinion anyway! A fine line between fun and up-for-a-laugh, and just a bit sad and weird. I thought I would bite the bullet and go for it.....not sure if I pulled it off, but my youngest two were happy. XXX

  3. ohhh, you rock your casual outfit, with a twist: I think those booties are absolutely chic!. Great job styling your jumper and looking comfy & cool!
Not a huge fan of christmas jumpers, but I resigned myself to see them, even if they've never been used here.
You always make me smile, and love particularly your genuinely funny pics!

    1. Thank you Monica! My booties were essential to me here....if I am going to look like a ninny, I need lovely feet :op. XXX

  4. Loved the disclaimer at the top of the post! I'm surprised you find them embarrassing as you're bold with your choices but I completely get it. I'm the same with Halloween. Isn't it interesting what works for some, others find awkward. Now I have to admit a do like a wee festive jumper. Not the over the top ones, mind. Funnily enough I'm doing a post of Christmas jumpers this week!
I really like yours and the way you've styled it. Keep it simple with jeans is the way to go. I was in London today at lunchtime and there was a group of about 8 people walking together all wearing Christmas jumpers! Must have been on a works do or something but I did think for a minute - hang on, have I been asleep for 2 weeks and it's actually almost Christmas!
And I love that last pic! That's brilliant!

    1. That is strange! I love dressing up for Halloween...weird eh?
I am looking forward to seeing what your idea of "Not over the top" is.....very intriguing indeed!!
We were so cold outside and the wind was hair was on end most of the time. I had to have a little bit of fun to warm up. The wee one found it hilarious when I did jump around like a ninny (at her request) XXX

  5. Snow way! Super cute! Your smile is what makes it!! ;D Love, Ann

  6. Snow way! Super cute! Your smile is what makes it!! ;D Love, Ann

    1. Thank you Ann.....if in doubt, grin like a every time! XXX

  7. Hi Samantha, loving your look, you'll blend in nicely on December 18th, it doesn't matter that you don't like Christmas jumpers, bet you're going to where one regardless! I'd like a pair of those snowman earrings, they'd complement my Santa ones nicely!

    1. Thank you Debbie. I have a pack of cheap little earrings (from Newlook, I think) Robins and snowflakes etc....lots of fun to wear. XXX

  8. I won't be wearing any Christmas sweaters. But you look cute in this one! Thanks for joining us on My Refined Style!

    1. Thank you jennifer....they don't sit very comfortably with me either! But, it is good to push one's boundaries from time to time! X

    1. You would love these lace boots, Jessica. And, you would rock them with that feminine twist. I used them to lift this super-casual look out of "boring" territory......and they are so comfortable, which is always a bonus! XXX

  11. I was the only family not to wear a Christmas jumper at our family do this weekend. Now I've seen your post I might be tempted - they aren't so bad and you look great! x #fakeituntilyoumakeit
