Too old for cropped tops and skinny jeans? | Breaking the fashion rules

Is 40 too old for skinny jeans and cropped tops?

A couple of years ago, just before I turned 40, I had a bit of a wobble style-wise.

I think it was my first midlife crisis (I anticipate more to come!)

And no, I am not talking about going crazy and buying leopard print micro-mini dresses and leather catsuits.
I'm talking about donating my 'too young' clothes to the charity shop and buying some more sensible items...more 'appropriate' for my age.

I still cringe thinking about it.
I would have been better off investing in the leather catsuit.

It all started after a sneering comment from someone regarding a dress I was wearing,
"Are you not a bit old for that?"
I remember a seed of doubt germinating in my mind, and thinking to myself,
"You ARE going to be 40...maybe they have a point"
"How long can you keep wearing student-chic style clothing?"
"Is it time to ditch those ripped jeans, buy a black pencil skirt and start growing up a little??"
The saddest part of this story is that I was filled with self-doubt about my fashion choices by someone with zero style! In fact less than Zero (is it even possible to have negative style??).

In hindsight there was probably an element of jealousy that provoked this comment in the first place.

Anyone who needs to put you down in order to feel better about themselves should be pitied not listened too.....AND also crossed off your Christmas card list!

So, after this temporary wobble (and the addition of some yawn-inducing items to my wardrobe) I feel like I need to make amends. Especially for those poor items sent unnecessarily into the great unknown (aka, the charity donation bags).

Here is an outfit that would make the Zero-styler's eyes water.
Super-Skinny jeans (actually, jeggings) and a cropped jumper.

Yes, I am over 40.
Yes, I have given birth to 3 children (and been the size of a hippopotamus each time).
And no, my body does not have model proportions and perfect muscle tone.
But I'm not sorry....I LIKE skinny jeans and I LIKE cropped jumpers...and that's the way its going to stay.

I know that, for some people, this might be slightly too much to bear.... should theses items not be banned for the over-40 woman?
One article I found agrees... In fact this article has a list of items that anyone over 30 shouldn't be wearing. OVER 30!! Are you kidding?

Well, I say we should be able to wear what we want!
As long as we have due respect for the occasion and we understand the limitations of our own figures then the only thing holding us back is our imaginations.

Do you own any 'forbidden' items?
Please let me know in the comments.

P.S  Please check out the lovely Catherine @Notdressedaslamb. She has a fantastic new post about wearing what you like and uploading it onto instagram...it sounds like lots of fun! I am looking forward to seeing many more fabulous rule-breakers in action.

P.P.S  I decided to buy leather leggings as the catsuit WAS a step too far.....However, I won't be ruling it out altogether...perhaps for my 50th?

I am pretty far away from looking like a girl...but I still feel like one inside!

  2. If I had a body shape like yours, hell, I'd wear cropped jumpers too! You look fab. I'm more an hourglass so this look wouldn't quite work for me but earlier this year I found a high waisted maxi skirt. Just for a laugh I paired it with a cropped top and bingo, that does work on me! Who'd have thunk!

    1. Cropped tops are made for beautiful petite women.
Over a maxi sounds like a great look for you (especially with you teeny waist!).
I definitely am envious of your hourglass curves...they make everything look feminine.
I am planning to try another cropped jumper over a dress next....or maybe that boring pencil skirt I bought during my crisis? It needs the dust scraped off it first!
I have just realised that I have also broken the cropped tops and short waist rule.
      Oh dear, Bad girl!

    2. That's kind of you to say but I'm not sure my waist is that teeny - it seems to be expanding! Especially this week as I'm off work and we've been for days/meals out! And yes, va va voom that pencil skirt!

I honestly believe that no one is EVER too old for anything.... some of the most stylish, fun and Fabulous people I know are neither young or perfect-figured.
I all comes from a positive outlook.

      Leather skinnies?...YES!
Never give up on those. They look fabulous..... and are surprisingly warm, so really practical here is Scotland (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).
I also have a leather shift dress, which will be getting an airing in the colder months.

  6. I hope you donated that "friend" to the charity shop too, Samantha - what an appalling thing to say to someone!! Crossed off your Christmas card list and then some, I hope...!

I love your sentiment here, you're spot-on with your observations about what we wear as we get older and how it makes not a blind bit of difference what age we are with regards to our wardrobes. I'm sure we all agree that that article was incredibly out of date (was it written 20 years ago??) - I've never read such a load of tosh and I'm so glad everyone agreed!

Thanks so much for the mention... I can't wait to see what everyone wears for #iwillwearwhatilike in August on Instagram - it should be fun. A good 50% of the themes are going to have to be silly (mismatching socks?!) and I hope it'll be a two-fingered salute to that article and the attitude it represents.

Your post was so entertaining - more please!!!

    1. Thank you, Catherine .
I am actually quite horrified as to how many 'helpful' articles there are out there....making women feel bad about themselves.
We women have a tough enough time (despite what people would like to think, it is still a man's world out there) without putting each other down.
I am sure your campaign will be a huge success and I hope it gives some fellow females the boost they need to rock their desired look, and break the 'rules'.

    1. Aww shucks, Thank you!
I firmly believe that the actual body/figure you have is irrelevant, it is the image or confidence you portray that matters.
I have a list of flaws as long as my arm (and I have long arms, which is a problem for another story on another day).
That is why it is important for us women to support and celebrate each other.
So thank you for your lovely comment.

I find that people who are nasty about the way someone looks are usually unhappy with their own life...and are just a little envious! I now take it as a compliment :-)

  14. The article that Catherine shared about what women should not wear over a certain age is sure silly. It's been fun participating in her style challenge this month on IG. I have always been a firm believer that wear what makes you comfortable regardless of trend, age, or size. I love this outfit on you!

My husband calls my black and white striped skinnies a 70's throwback (he is in his 50's) and tells me that I look like I'm going to a rock concert. He is a joker.
I keep trying other jean shapes, but a skinny just feels right, it's hard to give up!
